Here are some of the questions we are commonly asked by Australian organisations setting up in NZ.

How is PAYG and Withholding Tax handled in NZ?

PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is the equivalent of PAYG in Australia. KeyLink works with New Zealand’s Inland Revenue Department (IRD) to ensure that you meet your employer obligations.

The IRD is the NZ equivalent of the Australian Tax Office.

KeyLink will register your company with the IRD as an employer. Once this is done you won’t have to deal with the IRD for any payroll related matters.

What about Payroll Tax?

There is no equivalent to Payroll Tax in NZ.

How will I know NZ Minimum Employment Rights?

KeyLink knows the minimum employment rights enforced by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

The Department of Labour (DoL) has been amalgamated into MBIE and is the equivalent of the Australian Fair Work Ombudsman.

KeyLink can advise you on the requirements of the MBIE with respect to employees’ holiday and leave entitlements and then track these for you.

What about Compulsory Superannuation?

New Zealand doesn’t have compulsory superannuation, but does have KiwiSaver which is a voluntary workplace savings scheme administered by the IRD.

KeyLink will work with you to ensure that you meet your KiwiSaver obligations and can help you setup and operate a company super scheme if required.

KiwiSaver Employee Deductions and Employer Contributions are collected the IRD through the PAYE system.

How do we provide Payslips?

Employers are not required to supply their employees with payslips in NZ, however most do.

KeyLink can provide employees online access to their payslips, email them directly to employees, or mail or courier security payslips.

Do I need a NZ bank account to make Employee and IRD Payments?

You don’t need a NZ bank account. KeyLink offers 4 ways to make Employee and IRD payments:

1. We send you a report and you make the payment.

2. We email you a payments file to upload into your NZ Online Banking system.

3. We submit a file to ASB Management Services (Co-owned by CBA and ASB) who process the payment directly from your NZ bank account to your employee’s accounts.

4. We operate a Commercial Trust Account on your behalf. We require cleared funds 24 hours before employee payments are made.
